2 Was it for crimes that I had done
He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity! grace unknown! And love beyond degree!
3 Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut His glories in, When God, the mighty Maker, died For man, the creature's sin. |
4 Thus might I hide my blushing face
While His dear cross appears: Dissolve, my heart, in thankfulness! And melt, mine eyes, to tears!
5 But drops of grief can ne'er repay
The debt of love I owe; Here, Lord, I give myself away, 'Tis all that I can do.

2 We may not know, we cannot tell
What pains He had to bear; But we believe it was for us He hung and suffered there.
3 He died that we might be forgiven;
He died to make us good, That we might go at last to heaven, Saved by His precious blood. |
4 There was no other good enough
To pay the price of sin; He only could unlock the gate Of heaven, and let us in.
5 0, dearly, dearly has He loved,
And we must love Him too, And trust in His redeeming blood, And try His works to do.
